Multiphase Metering - Leading the Way
Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) is seeking to deploy the latest digital oilfield technology available in the oil and gas industry as part of the Kuwait Integrated Digital Fields (KwIDF) pilot project. “KOC‟s vision is to make a strategic investment in leading edge technology for Exploration and Production. The new E&P technologies are expected to deliver significant returns in terms of automating processes, collecting, analyzing and validating process data. The new technologies enable our people to make „smart‟ decisions through improved quality of field and process data and making that data immediately available in a multidiscipline collaborative work environment.” Production increase is expected, with a project milestone calling for 5% sustainable total daily production increase.
The Weatherford Alpha VSRD Multiphase Flowmeter is the latest flow metering technology in the marketplace. It utilizes an integrated flow computer to maintain all process and setup parameters and delivers real-time oil, water and gas rates, as well as produced volumes at line or standard conditions. The data is available locally on the touchpad color display or remotely via digital interface. Low power consumption and robust design makes it ideal for solar panel power and desert applications.
The Alpha VSRD is a modular system based on a Sonar flowmeter (S), a Venturi (V) flowmeter, a Red Eye (R) water-cut meter and a gamma Densitometer (D).
The Sonar flowmeter measures the convection of turbulent vortices using an array of dynamic strain sensors. Sonar has the unique ability to accurately measure total flow rate over a wide range of flow conditions. The Venturi is used as a flowmeter in multiphase flows and as a way to measure the liquid content in wet-gas flows. The Red EyeTM water-cut meter is a filter spectrometer that is based on the principle of the different near-infrared (NIR) absorption characteristics of oil and water. By measuring the attenuation of light at different wavelengths, the fraction of water relative to oil is found. This measurement principle is industry leading in flows that contain a large amount of gas. The Gamma densitometer is based on a small radioactive source (2 mCi, CS137) to measure the instantaneous density of the flow, hence it is readily correlated to the gas fraction. Combining these four sensing technologies yield a robust and accurate full range multiphase flowmeter.
The Alpha VSRD multiphase flowmeter was successfully piloted tested at KOC GC-22 and the results met the stringent tolerances required by KOC. Following the test, it was decided that the Alpha VSRD will be deployed in a number of locations as part of the GC-1 project. Weatherford is currently working with KOC to evaluate whether the Alpha meter can replace conventional test separation facilities in the future.
Thanks to KOC Research & Technology for contracting Weatherford to conduct the successful pilot test.
