BP's BOP Design Questioned

BP's BOP Design Questioned The blowout preventer that failed to stop the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill was thwarted by a bent pipe, says Pipeline & Gas Journal. A report from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), found that flow forces "induced a buckling condition" on the drill pipe, which became trapped between the ram block faces and prevented the valve stack from fully closing. The 551-page report, available in two volumes (Volume 1, Volume 2), also casts doubt on the efficacy of BOP valve stacks in preventing future oil spills.

Renovated Plant Handles Much More Sewage

Renovated Plant Handles Much More Sewage Thames Water Beckton, one of Europe's largest sewage treatment works, is undergoing a major renovation project that will allow it to treat 60% more sewage, according to Water Active. Upgrades include the motorization of manually operated valves, and the installation of intelligent electric actuators on the site's inlet penstocks. Recently, 75 actuators were installed on existing valves and penstocks.(scroll to pg. 11)

Piezo Pushes Production Assembly

Piezo Pushes Production Assembly As electronic mobile devices get smaller, the assembly challenge grows greater. Fortunately, piezoelectric dispensing technology can boost production and reduce costs, says Assembly magazine. The technology typically includes a valve, valve driver, and valve controller. The valve includes two piezoelectric actuators composed of stacked ceramic coins that expand and contract in response to changes in voltage supplied from the valve driver.

Video: Bottler Fills 4 Million Servings a Day

Video: Bottler Fills 4 Million Servings a Day Coca-Cola's largest privately held U.S. bottler inaugurated a 781,000 sq. ft. plant with four lines handling several container types and sizes, says Pack World. On Line 1, a 130 valve filler tops off cans, while lines 2 and 3 each use computer-actuated, 120 valve, neck hanging fillers. Line 4 uses a 100 valve filler that electronically meters each valve for fill control.

Synchronize Cylinders for Closer Tolerances

Synchronize Cylinders for Closer Tolerances Pulsation machines use valve-controlled hydraulic cylinders to pull epoxy impregnated carbon or glass fibers through heated dies to produce parts. Often using a single cylinder, which tends to pull parts off center, the machines are sufficient for many high-volume parts, but cannot meet the close tolerances required by certain complex parts. For these applications, multiple cylinders, working independently, might be a better choice, says NASA Tech Briefs.

Ash-water Valve Corrosion Solved

Ash-water Valve Corrosion Solved Ash-water handling is a high-switching application requiring valves to operate up to 30× a day. The abrasive coal-ash slurry typically requires valve reconditioning every few months, reports Engineering News. To achieve longer life, new ball valves and seats were coated with tungsten carbide for wear resistance. Six test valves were installed and tested, and eventually 240 valves were replaced.

River Water Gets Fresh Oxygen

River Water Gets Fresh Oxygen Water quality going into a Tennessee river was improved with a custom cone valve, says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Water begins with 0 ppm of dissolved oxygen, and the valve helps aerate the water to 100% saturation. Flow rates are better controlled at about 150 cu ft/sec, and the valve helps to meet water quality standards of 5 mg/L.

Nuclear Plant Receives 'Red' Reprimand

Nuclear Plant Receives 'Red' Reprimand The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a red finding, its most severe listing, against the Browns Ferry power plant. A valve on a residual heat removal system stuck shut in March 2009, but was not discovered until October 2010. Facility operators point to a manufacturing defect in the valve's stem threads that caused the problem. The valve has since been fixed.

Plug Train Stops at Defect

Plug Train Stops at Defect Shell Philippines Exploration & Production used a highly piggable, bidirectional plug to isolate an offshore pipeline and replace an emergency shutdown valve and manual block valve without having to depressurize and purge the 504 km, 24 in. OD pipeline. The isolation plug seals at about 2,900 psi and features two plug modules that work independently to seal and lock the pipeline, says Oil and Gas Journal.

DOT Addresses Aging Pipeline Problem

DOT Addresses Aging Pipeline Problem The explosions made headlines. Gas line explosions in Pennsylvania and California brought to light an aging pipeline infrastructure. Now, the U.S. Department of Transportation is looking to enhance oversight and increase inspections of pipelines and the valves and other equipment that service them. DOT's proposed plan is occurring despite the number of pipeline accidents dropping by half in the last two decades.

Early Design for Ice-making Machine

Early Design for Ice-making Machine In 1861, The Engineer magazine wrote about James Harrison, a printing apprentice who noticed that evaporating ether made metal colder. His ice-making machine drew ether from one vessel to another through valves. As it passed, it cooled the metal. After resuming a liquid state, the ether returned to the original vessel via a self-regulating valve.

About This Month's Topic

About This Month's Topic How Safe are Gas Pipelines?

While the number of pipeline incidents causing injuries or death has fallen, federal officials want to more strictly regulate inspection and maintenance of the pipelines, valves, and other infrastructure. Is DOT's increased oversight necessary?
