COROD(R) Continuous Rod and Flushbys – Success in Australia

COROD® Continuous Rod and Flushbys – Success in Australia

Weatherford's COROD continuous rod is one of the leading well optimization solutions for reciprocating and PC pump applications, serving as a superior alternative to conventional sucker rods. With over 16,000 active installations, COROD continuous rod is a proven and viable solution for improving the run-life of wells. The signature advantage of COROD continuous rod is its streamlined, uniform body design that requires only two connections: one at the top and one at the bottom. By reducing the number of threaded connections to two, contact loads are dispersed throughout the entire rod string which reduces stress on the tubulars and minimizes the potential for failures and the need for costly well interventions. In comparison with conventional sucker rods, COROD strings are noticeably lighter in weight, which reduces the amount of strain on the pumping unit. The elimination of couplings, centralizers and rod guides creates a larger annular space inside the tubing which helps minimize pressure losses. Due to the highly advanced features of COROD continuous rod, operators can greatly reduce maintenance and operational costs while improving the overall efficiency of their artificial-lift system.

Congratulations to the Australia ALS team who successfully installed the first COROD continuous rod string in Australia on May 28th, 2011. The country ALS team facilitated discussions with Santos Ltd. to utilize COROD continuous rod to maximize their coal seam gas (CSG) well run- life, particularly targeting highly deviated and horizontally-drilled wells. The team successfully demonstrated the ability of COROD continuous rod to substantially improve the run-life of wells and increase performance, leading Santos to award Weatherford with a tender for a significant pilot project beginning July 2011.

Prior to installing COROD continuous rod, innovative technologies were required to facilitate operations within Australia. The developments pertained to the extremely narrow roadways and restrictive road regulations within Australia. The presence of these country- specific regulations disallowed COROD continuous rod from being transported within Australia using the general modes of transport utilized in other operations globally. The GBU was tasked with developing a smaller transport reel that complied with legal transport vehicle regulations. The team worked aggressively to develop the small reel and deployment trailer (patent pending) to allow for unrestrictive movement as well as compliance to the laws and regulations for transporting COROD continuous rod within Australia. Without these developments, COROD continuous rod would not have been able to operate in Australia or other future target markets possessing restrictive road regulations and tight well-site locations.

In order to ensure operations commenced immediately after the contract was signed, the design of Weatherford's Mobile Gripper™ equipment needed to be customized to operate efficiently amongst Australia's country-specific regulations. The new design of the Mobile Gripper deck enabled manufacturing and testing to occur in Canada (still fulfilling the size dimensions of a standard sea container to ensure the lowest-cost means of shipping overseas was achievable), while also allowing the unit to be mounted onto the local trucks that adhere to country transport regulations. Congratulations to both the Weatherford Australia team and the COROD Continuous Rod and Flushbys GBU for the successful installation in Australia. This accomplishment was made achievable by close cooperation and a unified team effort. From the contributions made by the Australia team and GBU to the procurement, logistics, operational support, applications, and engineering personnel, Weatherford has once again proven its exceptional ability to maximize value for our customer's operations.
