OE | VOLUME 36 | NUMBER 12 Frontier forecasts It's time for OE to once again look at the world's emerging hot spots. One of the places generating the most interest, if not the most dollars yet, is also the coldest: the Arctic. OE's Jennifer Pallanich canvasses industry representatives to find out where the industry is headed in the next few years. Piping hot The world's first electrically heated pipe-in-pipe system is being installed on Islay, a North Sea gas condensate field with challenging flow assurance issues for the management of hydrates. Meg Chesshyre looks at the Total/Technip pilot scheme for this 6km tieback plus earlier 'seabed conditioning' innovations at location. Also this month, Tata Steel's Derek Bish discusses how to construct and efficiently insulate pipe-in-pipe bends for HP/HT service. Trend setting Baker Hughes continues to invest heavily in R&D having reorganized itself along 'geomarket' lines over the last couple of years. During the recent SPE ATCE gathering in Denver, Russell McCulley caught up with the oilfield services giant's president of products and technology, Derek Mathieson, to get his take on the latest technology trends. Seabed spy The industry has long relied on sensors and sporadic ROV footage to find out what's going on subsea. Now a new tool designed for permanent deployment at well sites is about to change all that, according to Weatherford's Ole Tom Furu. He tells Jennifer Pallanich how. Tip-top FPSOs Adhering to best practice in areas such as process optimization and piping, electrical and structural design will help to deliver safe and operable FPSO topsides that minimize capital and operating expenditures. Alliance Engineering's Norb Roobaert, Juan Campo, Howard Newman and Alan Phillips outline their approach topsides design optimization. Leveraging LNG Two platform supply vessels under construction at Louisiana's Harvey Gulf International will use LNG as a propulsion fuel, a first for the US. OE's Russell McCulley hears from Harvey Gulf and others about the move to LNG fuel in the offshore oil & gas market. Location, location. . . Offshore rig and vessel repair continues to produce attractive returns for yards that are well placed strategically and geographically. Meg Chesshyre looks at two players, one in Bahrain the other in Gibraltar, still relatively new to the offshore oil & gas industry yet making significant market inroads. Managing risk Ways in which risk management can be used in the offshore well construction process to improve safety and on-target performance are discussed by Halliburton's Hamayun Raja, AiJaz Rizvi and John Walters. OE also checks out a new BOP risk assessment system developed by Lloyd's Register's ModuSpec and Scandpower teams. |
