The Basics
How Energy Production Works
The greatest need modern civilizations have is energy. Learn about oil, electricity and newer forms of energy like solar and wind power. Oil - Drillling Rigs
A drilling rig is a machine which creates holes (usually called boreholes) and/or shafts in the ground.
Oil - Offshore drilling
Offshore drilling typically refers to the discovery and development of oil and gas resources which lie underwater through drilling a well.
Oil - Platforms
An offshore platform, often referred to as an oil platform or an oil rig, is a large structure used to house workers and machinery needed to drill wells in the ocean bed, extract oil and/or natural gas, process the produced fluids, and ship or pipe them to shore
Oil - Wells
An oil well is a general term for any boring through the earth's surface that is designed to find and produce petroleum oil hydrocarbons.
Oil Industry - Downstream
The petroleum industry is usually divided into three major components: Upstream, midstream and downstream. Midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category. The downstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the refining of crude oil, and the selling and distribution of natural gas and products derived from crude oil. Such products include liquified petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, jet fuel, diesel oil, other fuel oils, asphalt and petroleum coke. The downstream sector includes oil refineries, petrochemical plants, petroleum product distribution, retail outlets and natural gas distribution companies. The downstream industry touches consumers through thousands of products such as petrol, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, asphalt, lubricants, synthetic rubber, plastics, fertilizers, antifreeze, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, natural gas and propane.
Oil Industry - Midstream
The petroleum industry is usually divided into three major components: upstream, midstream and downstream. Midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category. The midstream industry processes, stores, markets and transports commodities such as crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (LNGs, mainly ethane, propane and butane) and sulphur.
Oil Industry - Upstream
The petroleum industry is usually divided into three major components: Upstream, midstream and downstream, though midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category. The upstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the searching for and the recovery and production of crude oil and natural gas. The upstream oil sector is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector. The upstream sector includes the searching for potential underground or underwater oil and gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and subsequently operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface.

The Energy Story
Energy Quest is the award-winning energy education website of the California Energy Commission. It debuted on the World Wide Web on October 1, 1995, to celebrate October as National Energy Awareness Month! Our newly updated version (EQ v. 2.0) debuted Memorial Day, May 27, 2002. Energy is an integral part of our daily lives. Without energy our society would decay into pre-historic savagery. Teaching an "energy ethic" to conserve finite resources is essential to our energy future, which is currently dependent on fossil fuels. We also must rely on our youth to help us create new ways to harness the elemental forces of our planet and the universe. They are tomorrow's scientists and inventors. They will discover new means of energy production and innovative ways to use less energy. We hope Energy Quest will answer their questions and spur creativity and imagination.
Hydrocarbons occupy a vital role in our life and continue to play an important role for many more years to come. We need to follow all technological innovations to continue our productivity standards to achieve our production targets. Let us extend our vision to achieve this mission.
