Highlights from the 2012 Salary Survey

• Salary Survey Highlights from the 2012 Salary Survey Compensation in the petroleum industry in 2012 continues to follow the growth trend of recent years, with an overall calculated increase in total compensation of 9.3 percent, or an average self-reported income of USD 223,472 in 2012 compared to USD 204,368 in 2011.
• Respondents reported an overall net change of 6.4 percent in base pay from 2011 to 2012 compared to a 6.3 percent net change in 2011.
• Mean base pay increased by 12.4 percent from USD 148,301 in 2011 to USD 166,753 in 2012.
• Bonus and extra income remained steady at more than USD 56,000 from 2011 to 2012.

Blowout at EOG site in Eagle Ford Shale – Nabors Rig Blows Out

A drilling rig owned by Nabors Drilling USA blew out and caught fire Wednesday evening just before 7 pm while drilling an Eagle Ford Shale horizontal well for EOG Resources in Lavaca County, Texas.

The well control incident occurred at Farm to Market 966 and State Highway 111 near Petersville, Texas. No injuries were reported.
Well control specialists from Houston have been called to put out the rig fire and conduct an investigation according to Shiner Volunteer Fire department Chief Mark Panus.
A nearby resident, who asked not to be identified, said her husband was in the front yard with their 4 year-old son at the time of the explosion and saw workers running. When he asked workers what happened the workers kept running so he too grabbed their son and ran, she said.

Global awards to find safest and most competent oil and gas firms

 

Oil and gas firms around the world are invited to submit nominations for the annual OPITO Safety and Competency Awards 2013 which recognise organisations that achieve the highest safety standards in the oil and gas industry.  The accolades will be presented at the OPITO Safety and Competency Conference (OSCC) held at the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE on Tuesday 19 November 2013. Shell is the headline sponsor of the event which is also supported by SEFtec and Atlas.

 

These OPITO awards recognise companies who are committed to building a safe and competent workforce through OPITO standards.

 

Any company associated with the oil & gas industry can enter if they can demonstrate their commitment to building a safe and competent workforce through the use of OPITO standards. Criteria to be judged will include the rationale for adopting the standards, range, number of staff trained or assessed to OPITO standards in the last 12 months, geographical location and examples where OPITO standards have shown an improvement in safety and competence.

 

The OPITO Approved Training Providers Award recognises the training provider which best demonstrates its commitment to developing the skills of their staff to deliver OPITO training. Criteria examines the range of standards used in the development programme, the number of staff involved over the year, structure and timeframe of the development programme and examples of innovation in learning and development.

 

This will be the OSCC's fourth year after it was introduced as an annual event to bring operators, contractors and the supply chain together with training organisations to provide a forum for improving standards of safety and competency that protect the workforce and the industry's reputation.

 

Speakers already announced for the event include Richard Cregan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management and Leo Koot, managing director of TAQA Bratani. The event will be chaired by Gordon Ballard, chairman of OPITO and Schlumberger UK Limited.  More details are available online.

With several operators confirming that production targets are being scaled back at their giant southern brownfield projects and a marked deterioration in the security situation, uncertainty continues to shroud the Iraqi oilfield services sector (OFS). With reduced targets taken into consideration, the ambition is for oil production capacity to exceed 8 million bpd in the mid-term, which is far higher than our view here at Douglas-Westwood. However, even in our 'internally constrained scenario', the scale of the market remains significant, requiring an estimated 1,500 new wells to be drilled, and expenditures exceeding $4 billion per year by 2016.The potential size of the opportunity makes it hard to ignore for operators and service companies alike.

 

Two parallel markets have been developing with the "Big-Four" service companies offering large integrated service packages in the south and more fragmentation in the exploration-oriented Kurdistan region in the north where more than 50 operators are active. In terms of supply of land rigs, our most recent analysis indicates that there are more than 90 in country operated by a mix of domestic, regional and western providers with a shortfall becoming apparent by 2015/16.
